Summer night cooling

Use cool night air to pre-cool your building overnight - reducing energy use, lowering costs and improving comfort.

Why should you activate it?

On warm days, does your building start already warm or is your air conditioning running at full speed in the mornings? On hot days, buildings absorb and store heat in its structure, resulting in high cooling demand and increased energy costs.

With summer night cooling, you utilise the free, lower temperature at night to cool down the building structure when electricity might be cheaper. This reduces the cooling load during the first hours of the day. If a cooling unit is installed, it will not need to be operated, thus offering savings. If no cooling unit is installed, a certain cooling effect will still be achieved.

What are the benefits?

Activating this function brings several important advantages for your building, your tenants, and your operating costs.

Key benefits include:
•    Lower energy costs: Reduces the cooling load during the early hours of the day.
•    Improved comfort: The building tenants arrive in the morning at a pleasant temperature, avoiding having to face heat buildup from the previous day.
•    Extended equipment life: Less strain on chillers and other connected parts.

This function suits buildings with changing occupancy and big temperature swings like offices, schools, hotels and shops. It is especially useful if the building structure is heavy, as these retain coolness longer to be released during the day. The summer night cooling function will help keep the indoor climate stable while reducing cooling needs.

Potential savings

A 3,000 m² retail space, shop or open space in a temperate climate usually needs air cooling load for 6 hours each summer morning. With Summer night cooling, the building is pre-cooled, so the chiller runs 2–3 hours less.

  • Chiller power: 32 kW (With EER of 3)
  • Time saved: 2 hours/day
  • Number of summer days: 78
  • Total energy saved: 5000 kWh
  • Cost savings: about £650 (at £0.13/kWh)

You also save on peak demand charges and extend equipment life, at no extra cost.

Bottom line: Summer night cooling is a simple, built-in feature that uses nature’s free cooling to reduce costs and improve comfort.

How does it work?

Summer night cooling is built into the control system IQlogic. To work like intended, fully automatic, it uses outdoor and indoor temperature sensors combined with time schedules to decide when to run. A complex number of conditions and temperature limits must also be met in order for it to be activated.

Here’s how it works:

  • The function is activated when outdoor air is cooler than indoor air and a specific number of conditions and temperature limits are met.
  • The GOLD unit runs at the set air flow/pressure, with a supply air temperature set point of 10°C (factory setting). It can either regulate via external duct located temperature sensors or using a preset time.
  • The function stops automatically when the desired room temperature is reached or if the conditions change.
  • Activation of the function can also take place via BMS communication or digital input signal. In this case no internal condition needs to be met. Everything is controlled via BMS or digital input signal.

Everything is handled by the GOLD unit's built-in logic - no extra hardware needed.
